One of the primary facilitation tools used in the development of both the Delta Fresh Foods Initiative and Somos la Semilla networks is the Future Search model. “Future Search is a large group planning meeting that brings a ‘whole system’ into the room to work on a task-focused agenda. The meeting is based on a simple notion: if we want dramatic new action plans, we need to use structures and processes equal to our aspirations” (Future Search, preface). Working in collaboration with a local host team, WhyHunger adapted this large group action planning model for regional gatherings in the Mississippi Delta and southeastern Arizona. The model has three aspects: meeting design (based on core principles); facilitation; and a global change strategy. For a thorough guide to the model read Weisbord & Janoff’s, Future Search: An Action Guide to Finding Common Ground in Organizations & Communities (Berrett-Koehler Publishers).
